Hybrid tomato plants are very popular today, as they contain the best characteristics of different varieties and are considered almost universal. Today, a suitable variety for cultivation can be selected for any region with different climatic conditions. One such example is the Sunrise tomato, a description of the characteristics of which you will read in this article.
Description and characteristics of tomato Sunrise
The variety is considered determinant, yielding early harvests of excellent quality vegetables. Bushes of low growth, do not exceed sixty centimeters. During growth, they need pinching, but they do not require tying to supports.
The tomato is early ripening, no more than two and a half months pass from the appearance of seedlings to the beginning of harvesting. One bush, with proper care, brings at least five kilograms of ripe vegetables. Ripe fruits are distinguished by a red tint, their pulp is very juicy, with a slight sourness. Tomatoes are rounded in shape, slightly flattened from the fruit stem. The skin is dense, not prone to cracking. One tomato weighs on average about two hundred and fifty grams.
The main advantage of the plant is its compact size. This makes it possible to plant many tomato bushes in a small area without worrying about the quality of the crop.
Cultivation of the variety is possible not only in greenhouse conditions, but also in unprotected beds. Ripe tomatoes are eaten fresh, used for making sauces, pastes, juices, canned.
Breeding history and region of growth
The tomato owes its origin to Dutch breeders. The high yield of the hybrid and its low demand for care pleased the gardeners of different regions. The inhabitants of Ukraine are especially fond of the variety.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Among the main advantages are the following features:
- high plant productivity;
- no need to install supports to perform a garter;
- excellent resistance to many diseases, most often found in nightshade plants;
- short ripening period;
- compactness of the bush;
- when grown in greenhouse conditions, it is possible to harvest throughout the year;
- ripe fruits are well transported.
There is only one negative point for all positive signs - the taste qualities of tomatoes are average, it is best to use them in canning.
Planting seeds
The period for growing seedlings depends on the season and is nine weeks for the winter season, six and five for spring and summer, respectively. Sowing is carried out in boxes or cassettes filled with a peat mixture with the addition of vermiculite.
Planting is carried out to a depth of one centimeter in moist soil.
If the seeds are purchased from a store, they should not be soaked.
Planting is completed by watering, the containers are placed in a warm place for germination.
Watering the sprouts must be done in small droplets using warm water. The seedlings can be dived in a couple of weeks, when the sprout will form one true leaf. When transplanting, it is recommended to pinch the main root so that the seedling begins to form lateral branches.After picking, the seedlings are placed on a well-lit windowsill.
Transplanting seedlings into open ground
this can be done when the seedlings match a number of traits. For example, up to ten leaves have already formed under the lower brush. As a rule, this work falls on mid-May.
The beds are prepared in advance, they are dug up, weeds are removed. Bushes are planted according to the scheme "fifty to fifty" centimeters.
In small areas, the distance between plants can be reduced.
At first, the seedlings must be protected at night with covering materials.
Agricultural technology of cultivation
The plant does not need special care, it can freely do with the usual measures for many tomatoes - weeding, watering, loosening the topsoil, adding fertilizing compositions.
Watering for the entire growth period is carried out five to ten times, everything here depends on the climate conditions. Water consumption should be at least thirty liters for each square meter of the site. Some gardeners began to use drip irrigation systems for this - it is both convenient and quite economical.
Potassium nitrate is used as the main fertilizer. Most of it should be brought in during the ripening period. In addition, the plant will need phosphorus compounds.
Tomato Sunrise needs pinching, which is carried out to the lower fruit cluster.
How to get seeds for next year?
Some gardeners pick them from the ripe tomatoes, dry them and save them for the upcoming planting. But you can purchase seed material at a specialized store. Before sowing, they should only be soaked in salt water and removed to the surface.
Diseases and their prevention
The Sunrise varieties are good because they are able to withstand many diseases that tomato plants are susceptible to. But if at an early stage of the growing season they are treated with special compounds, then you can create reliable protection against such troubles.
Parasites that can damage the tomato:
- Colorado beetle;
- aphid;
- beetle;
- thrips.
Special chemicals that can be purchased in stores will help you cope with such unwanted guests.
The plant is considered an excellent candidate for cultivation in a garden bed or greenhouse. All gardeners speak of him quite well, because the fruits of the tomato are really attractive in appearance, the bushes are high-yielding and at the same time quite compact. Considering the fact that mature vegetables do well with long-term transport, it is recommended to grow them commercially.
