Renovation strawberry varieties are increasingly attracting the attention of gardeners around the world. This is due to the fact that such plants produce crops for a long time and you can feast on fresh fruits for much longer. Evi-2 (sometimes called eva) has a good reputation and is renowned for its stability and incredible berry flavor.
Description of the variety of strawberry evi-2
Let's start with a description of the berry. The variety of garden strawberries Evi-2 is a compact, a sprawling, rounded bush with an average amount of light green foliage. A large number of long peduncles are formed on the plant, but whiskers are practically absent, which makes dividing the bush the only suitable way for reproduction.
Fruiting begins in mid-June and lasts almost until the end of summer. The berries are hard and ovoid. They are colored deep red, but the core is white and pink. On average, the weight of one fruit is 15-25 grams. The pulp is firm and very dense, sweet and sour taste with a pleasant aroma.
Strawberries evi-2 tolerate heat and drought well, but too bright sunlight and lack of timely watering can lead to the fact that the berries begin to shrink and become drier.
The fruits appear in unison, in one big "wave", usually from 1 square meter of planting to 5.5 kilograms of harvest are harvested. Due to their consistency, the resulting berries can easily tolerate transportation and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Breeding history and region of growth
Garden strawberry of the Evi-2 variety was bred in 1998 in England, by scientist and breeder Peter Vincent. Everglade and J92D12 were used as parent varieties.
This variety perfectly tolerates all weather disasters that can be encountered in central Russia. The plant is not afraid of drought, heat, sudden temperature changes and winter frosts. These strawberries can be grown both in the south and north.
Evi-2 can hibernate without shelter at a temperature of -22 degrees, but with the condition of a large snow carpet.
To prepare plants for winter in the north, they are mulched and covered first with spruce branches, and then with agrofibre. In the central region, it will be enough to carry out mulching and cover the plantings with natural material.
Advantages and disadvantages
Variety advantages:
- the berries are very tasty and beautiful;
- the resulting crop is well transported and stored for a long time;
- thanks to the renovation of the variety, fresh fruits can be obtained throughout the season;
- the compactness of the bush allows you to plant more plants in a small area;
- evi-2 is not afraid of winter frosts;
- the variety has good resistance to fungal diseases and rot.
Disadvantages:
- the pulp of such fruits is quite hard and crunches a little. It should be noted that not everyone will find this quality attractive;
- after heavy rains, the berries tend to crack;
- a good harvest can be achieved only with high-quality care, which includes frequent watering and feeding;
- the absence of antennae significantly complicates the process of plant reproduction.
The absence of a mustache may seem like a plus for someone, because in this case all the forces of the plant will go to the formation and ripening of fruits.
Landing rules
You can plant remontant strawberries in open ground at the end of Aprilwhen the threat of return frosts has passed or in August. Many gardeners recommend giving preference to the spring season.
When choosing a place to grow berries, you should pay attention to the fact that they love warmth and sunlight. It is also very important to consider what crops were grown in the designated place before the garden strawberries. It reacts best to soil from beans, garlic, dill, parsley, hyacinths and crocuses. Unwanted precursors would be cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, or potatoes.
Given that the Evi-2 strawberry bushes are quite compact, they are usually grown using a two-line bush method, which can also protect plants from fungal infections. When using this method, the distance between rows in one tape and between individual bushes is 25-35 centimeters. 70-80 centimeters of free space is left between the tapes.
Before planting strawberries, it is necessary to fertilize the soil. The following fertilizers are used per square meter:
- 1 bucket of compost or humus;
- 2 liters of vermicompost;
- 400-500 grams of wood ash.
The landing of the evi-2 is as follows:
- First, dig holes, the depth and width of which will be equal to 25-30 centimeters;
- The resulting pits are filled with water and plants are placed in them;
- After the seedling sits tightly in the ground, the plantings are watered and mulched again with grass, needles or compost.
Further care of the strawberries will consist in abundant, preferably drip irrigation, which will help the bushes to survive the hot and arid climate. It is also very important to apply fertilizers in a timely manner, starting in April, once a month the plants are fed with organic or mineral compounds.
For the best fruiting planting, it is recommended to renew every 4-5 years.
Reproduction methods
Considering the fact that there are practically no mustaches on Evi-2 strawberries, the only vegetative method would be to divide the bush. To perform such work, an adult, spreading plant is dug out of the ground and carefully divided into several parts, each of which must have leaf rosettes and well-developed roots. The resulting bushes are planted in new places and looked after as separate plants.
- Also, such garden strawberries can be propagated by the seed method, but it should be borne in mind that it does not give any guarantees for the preservation of varietal characteristics:
- In late February - early March, the soil is laid out in a container and spilled on top with water;
- Then seeds are scattered on the surface and lightly pressed into the ground;
- The plantings are covered with foam or glass and periodically ventilated and sprayed from a spray bottle;
- After 3-4 weeks, the shelter can be removed.
The first shoots should hatch after 20-30 days.
Diseases and pests
The garden strawberry variety has good immunity to common diseases such as powdery mildew and fruit rot. The plant is most likely to meet leaf spot or late blight. Among insects, slugs and grape snails will be the most frequent guests.
Late blight | You can get rid of late blight by spraying the plants with Brodsky liquid, copper sulfate or such a chemical as Oxyhom. |
Leaf spot | The preparations "Fitosporin", "Horus", "Falcon", "Ordan", etc. will be effective against leaf spot. |
Slugs and grape snails | Dry superphosphate is laid out around the plantings, and the bushes themselves are sprinkled with a mixture of tobacco dust and ash. |
As a preventive measure, it is necessary to adhere to all the rules for caring for the plant, namely, timely water, fertilize and remove dry foliage. Preventive treatment with Brodsky liquid or garlic infusion will also be effective.
The evi-2 remontant strawberry variety can bring a rich harvest, provided that all agricultural rules are followed. The resulting berries have a wonderful taste, well tolerate transportation and are stored for a long time.
