The bulb is small, oblong, not suitable for food. The roots are filiform, white. The seeds are small, black. It is distinguished from ordinary onions by the following parameters:

The flowering of Schnitt onions is original. It starts in May and lasts all summer. Ball-shaped inflorescences are formed on the arrows. The balls are made up of many umbrellas in which the seeds are hidden. The color of the umbrellas can be of all shades of purple, lilac and pink. Schnitt bows are often used in landscape design. He is able to decorate curbs, alpine slides and flower beds.
Beneficial features
Schnitt feathers are not only pleasant to the taste, but also have beneficial properties, taking care of human health. They include a group of vitamins, trace elements and amino acids: vitamins C and B, iron, calcium, carotene and proteins.
The use of chisel is recommended for people with heart, vascular diseases, it is also good for the kidneys, liver and gallbladder.
Among other things Schnitt helps to fight garden pests, drives away onion and carrot flies, kills fungal spores affecting roses, fruit trees and gooseberries. With its flowering, it attracts bees who collect nectar from its sweet umbrellas.
Cooking
Young juicy feathers that have not reached flowering are suitable for food. Salads are prepared from them, they are added to the first and second courses, used for filling pies, and of course Russian okroshka with chives is always tasty and aromatic.
Schnitt is attractive because it lacks the typical onion aroma and harsh aftertaste. This wonderful onion can often be found in French and Italian cuisine.
Onion flowers are edible and have a mild, delicate flavor. They are ideal for fancy soups and salads, fish dishes and cheese sauces.
Growing
The Schnitt onion variety is grown in three traditional ways:
- sown with seeds.
- planted with seedlings.
- grown by dividing the plant.
The onion grows quickly and the easiest growing method is by dividing.
Seedlings
You can grow onions for seedlings from seeds at home. The best sowing time is March. This will require:
- fill container land;
- shed priming;
- sow seeds;
- slightly sprinkle with sand;
- container cover with foil and put in a dark place;
- ventilate daily and moisten from a spray bottle;
- when the sprouts appear remove the film and place the container on a sunny windowsill.
Landing in the ridges is carried out at the end of April. Pre-fertilize the earth with compost, dig up, remove weed rhizomes. The depth of the planting holes is 1.5 cm, the row spacing is 20 cm. 3-4 plants are planted in each hole. Water as the soil dries up.
With the seedling method of growing, it will be possible to try juicy greens already in the current season.
Seeds
Onion seeds are small and have a low germination rate. To work with them, you can use the method of sticking to paper tapes (starch paste is applied to toilet paper and seeds are densely placed).
It is recommended to soak the seeds before planting and then dry them. However, with soil moisture and sufficient temperature, the seeds germinate perfectly even without soaking. Landing in the ridge is as follows:
- dig the earth, loosen up;
- to do shallow grooves 0.3 cm x 20 cm wide;
- spill with water, you can add complex fertilizer;
- sow densely seeds;
- sprinkle grooves;
- slightly compact the soil;
- mulch sawdust, old newspapers, wood rot;
- to water as needed.
The seedling density is thinned out after the roots get stronger... Excess plants are not thrown away, but planted in another place, for example, on a flower bed.
When sowing chives with seeds, it is advisable to let them grow stronger and do not pluck it on a feather in the first year.
By dividing the bush
The cutter grows quickly and takes root without problems. You can divide the onion in spring or September. This is not difficult to do:
- dig up the plant and divide into parts 8-10 roots each.
- prepare holes and spill water
- plant vertically to a depth of about 3.5 cm. 30 plants can be planted on 1 sq. m.
- after landing compact the soil;
- conduct active watering.
Thus, a large amount of onion growth can be grown in 2-3 years.
Landing before winter
Onions can be sown before winter, by analogy with spring sowing, ridges with sandy and drainage soil can be made. Sowing is carried out in late September, early October. Do not pre-soak the seeds.
After sowing, water the bed and mulch 1 cm. Cover the bed with foliage, spruce branches and rags. After the snow falls, make a snow cover. Thus, the seeds will be hardened and in spring they will show friendly shoots.
If desired, you can conduct dividing the mother plants and planting the "children" in a new place in the month of September... In this case, cut off the old feather to the neck. In a month, the plant will give young roots, and at the first frost, it is advisable to cover the bed with the transplanted onion with spruce branches, foliage and woven material.
Watering and lighting
The chisel is not picky about care. The main thing is to water it abundantly in dry times, he loves moisture. The rest of the care rules are elementary: loosening, feeding, removing weeds, and thinning and planting when thickening.
Watering is desirable with settled water, without chlorine. As for the sun, the Schnitt variety can grow in partial shade and in the sun.
Top dressing
Fertilizing under the chisel is often unnecessary. Enough once a season, in July. Fertilizers can be organic (infusion of mullein, bird droppings) or industrial preparations based on minerals, phosphorus and potassium salts.
Diseases and pests
Chives have a strong immunity to disease and pests, and yet it sometimes happens that it can get sick.
Name | Description | Measures |
---|---|---|
Onion thrips | Small insect eating a plant and drinking its juice | Dig the onion out of the ground and warm it up in water + 50C, then dry it in the sun. |
Powdery mildew | White bloom appears on feathers | Destroy diseased leaves, then treat with any fungicide. |
Rust | Rusty stains | Remove diseased plants with Topaz or Falcon. |
Disease prevention
In order to protect the future harvest from "evil spirits" you need to properly care for the plants. Loose row spacings, weed soil on ridges, apply biological, potash and phosphorus fertilizers. Do not overdry or overflow the soil. Examine onions for the appearance of primary signs of the disease.
Harvest
Chives are unusual and are not harvested in the fall in the form of bulbs. There are many other ways to preserve crops. The onion feather is frozen, dried, pickled. It can be dug up and transplanted into a flower container at home for the winter, where it will grow throughout the winter.
You can cover the ridge with a film and feast on fresh and delicate greens before the onset of severe frosts. Onion seeds can also be collected for storage. They are dried and added to dishes. Don't forget about onion flowers - they can also be dried, salted or frozen.
As you can see chives bow has no negative characteristics... A beautiful, tasty, non-capricious, early onion chisel seems to have been created to satisfy all the wishes of gardeners with its presence in the beds.
